Nikon Z 6

The Nikon Z 6 is the best camera for night photography. The more I have used it, the more I like it. The Z 6 separates itself from other great night photography cameras by getting 1 to 2 stops better with cleaner ISOs. That is game-changing camera night photography. It means I can pretty much shoot in any dark sky condition, even with an f/4 lens, and come away with excellent image quality.

Phottix Aion Universal Wireless Timer and Shutter Release

Most night photographers struggle with the most basic requirement to make long exposures: an intervalometer. I believe I’ve found the solution: the Phottix Aion. After much testing and firsthand experience with many, many manufacturers’ intervalometers—both in my own photography and by playing with what people bring to workshops—I affirm that the Phottix Aion is the best intervalometer you can buy.

Coast FL75R Rechargeable Pure Beam Focusing Headlamp

I never liked headlamps until I used this one. The FL75R is comfortable to wear and easy to operate. I mainly use it for the red lamp so I can see safely without ruining my night vision, but also like the focusable white beam for seeing far off in the dark.

I love making images with this lens. I’ve owned two, dropped one (grin). I started experimenting with near focusing at wide aperture and doing long exposures. Nice bokeh. Like.

Profoto Acute B2 + head + Magnum Reflector & Grid

When I want 600 Ws of power, and a really gorgeous, controllable light, I pack this monster. When I got it, it was revolutionary in its small-ness. Nowadays, it is not as small as battery-powered flashes can be, but I still love it for architectural and portrait lighting at night.
